Desinfektioon is the process of reducing or eliminating pathogenic microorganisms on inanimate objects and surfaces to levels considered safe for public health. It is distinct from sterilization, which aims to remove all forms of life, and from sanitization, which lowers microbial counts to acceptable levels.

Disinfection methods are chemical and physical. Chemical disinfectants include alcohols (ethanol and isopropanol) for surfaces and hands, chlorine-releasing compounds (sodium hypochlorite), hydrogen peroxide, peracetic acid, glutaraldehyde, and quaternary ammonium compounds. Physical methods include heat (such as pasteurization or boiling) and irradiation (UV-C). Efficacy depends on the target organism, the presence of organic matter, the concentration and contact time, temperature, pH, and material compatibility. Organic matter can reduce disinfectant effectiveness, so cleaning is often performed prior to disinfection.

Applications are wide: in healthcare facilities to disinfect surfaces and instruments, in laboratories, in the food and beverage industry to sanitize equipment, and in households for kitchen and bathroom surfaces. Disinfection is also used in water treatment to reduce microbial loads. Some spores and resistant organisms require stronger or specialized agents and procedures.

Safety and environmental considerations are important. Disinfectants can be toxic to humans and ecosystems; proper ventilation, protective equipment, correct dilution, and safe disposal are essential. Certain chemicals can corrode materials or form hazardous residues, and some combinations (for example, mixing bleach with ammonia) are dangerous. Following manufacturer instructions and local guidelines ensures effective and safe use.
