Desaturate is a verb describing the action of reducing or removing color saturation from a visual image or color. In color theory, saturation refers to the intensity or vividness of a hue; desaturating moves colors toward gray, decreasing chroma while leaving brightness relatively unchanged. The term can also be used more broadly to indicate any reduction in the perceived strength of a color.

In visual arts and digital imaging, desaturation is a common adjustment used to achieve a muted or neutral look, accentuate other elements, or prepare an image for grayscale conversion. Desaturation can be applied to an entire image or to specific regions, enabling selective emphasis. Various methods exist, such as lowering a saturation control in color spaces (for example, HSL or HSV) or converting to grayscale through luminance-preserving formulas. Some workflows distinguish between simple desaturation and true grayscale conversion, where the latter may preserve luminance information more faithfully.

In practical design, desaturated palettes are often used to create contrast, focus, or a particular mood. While reduced saturation can aid readability and cohesion, excessive desaturation may diminish visual interest or accessibility for color-impaired viewers. Designers sometimes combine desaturation with other adjustments, such as contrast or brightness changes, to maintain legibility and impact.

In chemistry, desaturation refers to reactions that remove saturating elements or introduce double bonds, effectively reducing the saturation level of a molecule. This can include the desaturation of fatty acids by enzymatic action or other reactions that convert single bonds to double bonds, altering chemical properties and reactivity.
