Dendroklimatologjia is the scientific study of past climates using tree rings. This field combines dendrochronology, the science of dating tree rings, with climatology, the study of climate. By analyzing the width, density, and isotopic composition of tree rings, scientists can reconstruct past environmental conditions such as temperature, precipitation, and drought severity. Each ring represents one year of growth, and its characteristics are influenced by the prevailing climate during that year. Wider rings generally indicate favorable growing conditions with ample resources, while narrower rings suggest stress from drought, cold, or disease. Isotopic analysis can provide further insights into temperature and moisture availability.

The process of dendroklimatological reconstruction involves collecting tree core samples from living trees or deadwood. These samples are then carefully cross-dated to establish an accurate chronology, ensuring that each ring is precisely assigned to its calendar year. Once dated, the physical and chemical properties of the rings are measured and analyzed. These data are then statistically compared with modern climate records to develop a transfer function that relates ring characteristics to climatic variables.
