Dendritele is a genus of colonial coral-like cnidarians characterized by slender, dendritic branches forming tree-like colonies. Colonies consist of numerous polyps linked by a shared calcium carbonate skeleton, creating a lattice that increases feeding and light-collecting surface. Individual polyps are small and bear tentacles around the mouth; many colonies host photosynthetic symbionts, imparting a pale to brownish hue.

Habitat and distribution: Found in tropical and subtropical reefs of the Indo-Pacific, including the Red Sea, typically at shallow to intermediate depths (approximately 5–24 meters) where light supports photosymbionts.

Ecology: Dendritele colonies contribute to reef structure, offering shelter for small organisms. They feed on plankton and capture particles with their tentacles; symbiotic algae provide additional energy under suitable light.

Reproduction and growth: The genus reproduces asexually by budding and sexually via broadcast spawning. Planula larvae disperse before settling to form new colonies. Growth is relatively slow, with colonies expanding over years.

Taxonomy and name: Dendritele is placed tentatively within Scleractinia, reflecting its dendritic morphology. The name derives from dendron, Greek for 'tree', and the diminutive suffix -ele used in several coral genera.

Significance and threats: Though not a dominant reef-builder, Dendritele adds to habitat complexity and is used in studies of coral morphology, symbiosis, and resilience. Like other corals, it is vulnerable to warming, acidification, and pollution.
