Lightcollecting is a broad term used to describe the gathering of light from sources to enable observation, measurement, or energy conversion. In optics and photonics, it denotes the design of systems that collect photons from a source, transmit or concentrate them, and deliver them to a detector or absorber. The quality of light collection depends on factors such as the solid angle or numerical aperture of the optical elements, wavelength dependence, and losses from reflection, scattering, absorption, and detector efficiency.

Common components include lenses, mirrors, optical fibers, light guides, and concentrators, as well as the detectors that register the light such as photodiodes, photomultiplier tubes, CCD or CMOS sensors, and solar cells. Design goals often emphasize maximizing throughput, minimizing stray light, and achieving uniform illumination or high signal-to-noise ratio.

Applications span astronomy (collecting faint starlight with telescopes), microscopy, spectroscopy, fluorescence imaging, imaging systems, and solar energy harvesting. In astronomy, larger collecting areas and higher numerical aperture increase sensitivity to dim objects. In solar energy, light collectors concentrate sunlight onto photovoltaic cells to improve efficiency.

Beyond technical usage, some practitioners and collectors study or assemble historic light sources and luminaires for archiving and display, a practice related to lighting heritage preservation. This cultural aspect focuses on the morphology and context of lamps, bulbs, and optics that contributed to historical light collection technologies.
