Demüelinatsioonihaigus refers to a group of neurological disorders characterized by damage to the myelin sheath, a protective layer that surrounds nerve fibers in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Myelin acts as an insulator, allowing for the rapid and efficient transmission of electrical signals. When myelin is damaged or destroyed, this process is disrupted, leading to a variety of neurological symptoms.

The exact causes of demyelinating diseases are diverse and not always fully understood. They can be autoimmune, where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own myelin. Other causes include genetic factors, infections, and environmental exposures. The most well-known demyelinating disease is multiple sclerosis (MS), which primarily affects the central nervous system. Other examples include Guillain-Barré syndrome, which affects the peripheral nervous system, and leukodystrophies, a group of rare genetic disorders.

Symptoms of demyelinating diseases vary widely depending on the location and extent of myelin damage. Common signs and symptoms can include problems with vision, such as blurred or double vision, numbness or tingling sensations, muscle weakness, fatigue, problems with coordination and balance, and cognitive difficulties. The progression of these diseases can also differ, with some being relapsing-remitting and others being progressive. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of neurological examination, imaging techniques like MRI, and sometimes lumbar puncture or blood tests to identify specific markers. Treatment strategies aim to manage symptoms, reduce inflammation, and in some cases, slow disease progression.
