Demüelinatsioonhaigusi are a group of neurological disorders characterized by damage to the myelin sheath, the protective outer covering of nerve fibers in the central and peripheral nervous systems. Myelin acts as an insulator, allowing electrical impulses to travel quickly and efficiently along nerves. When myelin is damaged or destroyed, these impulses are slowed or blocked, leading to a wide range of neurological symptoms.

The exact causes of demyelinating diseases are not fully understood, but they are often believed to involve an autoimmune response where the body's immune system mistakenly attacks its own myelin. Genetic predisposition and environmental factors may also play a role.

The symptoms of demyelinating diseases vary greatly depending on the location and extent of the myelin damage. Common symptoms can include weakness, numbness, tingling, vision problems, fatigue, coordination difficulties, and cognitive impairments. The progression of these diseases can also differ; some are relapsing-remitting, with periods of recovery followed by relapses, while others are progressive, leading to steady worsening of symptoms.

One of the most well-known demyelinating diseases is multiple sclerosis (MS), which affects the brain and spinal cord. Other examples include neuromyelitis optica spectrum disorder (NMOSD), acute disseminated encephalomyelitis (ADEM), and certain peripheral neuropathies like Guillain-Barré syndrome. Diagnosis typically involves a combination of medical history, neurological examination, imaging techniques such as MRI, and sometimes cerebrospinal fluid analysis. Treatment strategies aim to manage symptoms, reduce inflammation, and slow disease progression, though there is often no cure.
