In international law, demarcation follows delimitation. Delimitation is the agreement on the route or line of a boundary in a treaty, while demarcation is the on-the-ground marking of that line with boundary markers, fences, beacons, or other physical indicators. The two steps may occur together or sequentially, and they often involve technical surveys, mapping, and negotiation.

The typical process includes negotiations or the work of joint border commissions, cartographic and field surveys, agreement on the exact line, ratification by participating states, and the installation and maintenance of boundary markers. Modern demarcation also employs geographic information systems, satellite imagery, and other surveying technologies to ensure precision and documentation.

Demarcation applies to land borders, rivers and shorelines, and maritime boundaries, where it may involve buoys, beacons, or underwater markers. It aims to reduce ambiguity and disputes, but demarcation can still be contested by states, communities, or other stakeholders, especially when treaties are vague, natural changes occur, or security and migration concerns arise. Disputes may be resolved through bilateral negotiations, mediation, arbitration, or adjudication by international forums.
