delaven

Delaven is a constructed language (conlang) designed for worldbuilding and role-playing settings. It is spoken by the fictional Delavi, a coastal people in the imagined region of Aurelia. The language was developed as a collaborative project among fans of fantasy worlds and has appeared in novels, games, and fan wikis.

Phonology and writing: Delaven has a relatively small phoneme inventory, with five vowels and about twenty-two consonants. Stress tends to fall on the penultimate syllable. The standard writing system uses a Latin-based alphabet with diacritic marks to indicate vowel quality and stress. A supplementary script, the Delavene script, is described in some worldbuilding materials but is not required for reading everyday Delaven.

Grammar: Delaven is primarily analytic with a subject–verb–object (SVO) base order. Nouns do not mark gender; case relations are shown with postpositions rather than noun inflection. Adjectives follow the nouns they modify. Verbs encode aspect rather than tense, with separate particles indicating completed, ongoing, and habitual actions. Pronouns distinguish person and number, and verb morphology can show subject agreement via short enclitics or clitics.

Lexicon and sample: Core vocabulary covers kinship terms, nature, and basic daily actions. Common greetings and politeness forms reflect social hierarchy, with distinct registers for formal and informal speech. The language includes several idiomatic expressions tied to seafaring and storytelling.

Usage and status: Delaven has a small but active learning community among writers and game designers. It is primarily used in speculative fiction and tabletop campaigns, with documentation, word lists, and example texts maintained on community wikis. As a constructed language, it remains open to expansion and revision.
