It is typically intended to publicly communicate claims, commitments, or facts and may carry legal, political, moral, or administrative significance. The word comes from the Latin declarare, via French declaration, and in Czech is used across several domains, including politics, law, administration, and informatics.

In political and legal contexts, deklarace expresses fundamental principles or commitments, such as independence, sovereignty, or human rights. Some deklarace aim to influence policy or international relations, and their legal force can vary from binding to persuasive, depending on context and accompanying instruments. In administrative settings, a deklarace is a formal statement submitted to authorities or the public, such as a celní deklarace (customs declaration) that provides information about goods, or other official statements required for compliance or governance.

Historically and internationally, notable examples include the Deklarace nezávislosti (Declaration of Independence) and Všeobecná deklarace lidských práv (Universal Declaration of Human Rights). In informatics and programming, deklarace refers to introducing the names and types of variables or procedures to a compiler, defining interfaces without necessarily providing implementations.
