defektní

Defektní is an adjective used in Czech (and to a large extent in Slovak) to describe something that is defective, faulty, or flawed. It is applied to tangible things such as devices, machines, components, software, and products, as well as to processes or arguments that fail to function as intended or meet required standards.

Etymology: The term comes from the noun defekt (defect), which in turn originates from Latin defectus and/or German Defekt. The suffix -ní forms the adjective defektní. In Slovak, a closely related form is defektný.

Usage and nuance: In technical or consumer contexts, a defektní item is one that exhibits a defect that may justify repair, replacement, or return. In everyday language it can function similarly to vadný or chybný, but defektní often conveys a more formal or technical sense. It is more common in written rather than purely colloquial speech and appears frequently in product recalls, quality control reports, and manuals.
