Decibelbased is an adjective used to describe methods, measurements, or design approaches that use the decibel scale as the primary metric. The decibel is a logarithmic unit that expresses ratios of power or amplitude, allowing large dynamic ranges to be represented compactly. In this usage, systems, calculations, or displays are organized around decibel values rather than linear units.

Common domains include audio engineering, acoustics, telecommunications, and electronics. Examples include meter displays that show levels in decibels (for instance VU or peak meters), gain-setting and level matching expressed in dB, and loudness normalization schemes described in decibel-based terms (such as LUFS). A decibelbased design may also refer to control algorithms that operate on dB thresholds and attenuation or amplification expressed in dB.

Technical notes: Decibels quantify ratios relative to a reference; several references exist (dB SPL for sound pressure, dBV, dBm for electrical power or voltage levels). Because decibels are logarithmic, arithmetic performed directly in dB can be non-intuitive and sometimes inappropriate, so conversions to linear scale are used for processing. The decibel-based approach generally aligns with human perception of loudness and the practical needs of hardware with wide dynamic ranges, but it can cause ambiguity if reference standards or definitions are not clearly stated.
