Nonintuitive is an adjective used to describe ideas, results, or designs that are not readily grasped through ordinary intuition. Such items may be correct or useful but require deliberate reasoning, formal models, or detailed explanations to be understood.

In practice, nonintuitive contrasts with intuitive, which denotes ease of understanding or immediacy. The term signals a gap between how something operates and how it is perceived at first glance. It does not by itself judge correctness, only comprehensibility from an intuitive standpoint.

Originating from the prefix non- plus intuitive, with intuitive tracing to Latin intueri “to look at, contemplate,” the word is common in technical writing, science, mathematics, and design discourse. Some writers distinguish nonintuitive from counterintuitive: the former simply means not easy to understand, while the latter suggests something that contradicts normal expectations or common sense.

Contexts and examples: in science and engineering, nonintuitive results may arise from complex models, probabilistic reasoning, or high-dimensional phenomena. In user experience, a system or workflow can be functionally valid yet nonintuitive, requiring onboarding or documentation. In education, educators may present nonintuitive concepts with demonstrations to build a corresponding intuition.
