A debutanizer is a distillation column used in hydrocarbon processing to separate butanes (C4) from heavier hydrocarbons (C5 and above). The feed to a debutanizer is typically the bottom stream of a prior separation stage, such as a depropanizer, and the column’s overhead is enriched in C4 and lighter components while the bottoms contain the heavier C5+ fraction. The unit is an essential step in refining and petrochemical trains where precise C4/C5 separations are required for downstream processing or product specification.

In refinery and petrochemical operations, debutanizers commonly occur in sequences that treat light ends from natural gas liquids, LPG, or cracker feeds. The C4-rich overhead may be sent to a separate butane splitter to separate n‑butane and isobutane, which are often routed as feedstocks for alkylation, gasoline blending, or further reforming. The C5+ bottoms may be processed further in a gasoline pool or directed to other refining blocks, depending on the plant configuration and product slate.

Design and operation: A debutanizer is a fractionating column with trays or packing, a reboiler, and a condenser with reflux control. It is typically operated at near atmospheric pressure, though some plants use slight vacuum or modest pressure to optimize separation. Key parameters include feed quality, temperature and pressure control, reflux ratio, and column height. Proper operation minimizes carryover of heavier components into the C4 stream and ensures a clean, stable split between C4 and C5+.
