deNVAO

deNVAO, short for de Nederlandse Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie, is the joint accreditation organization for higher education in the Netherlands and the Flemish Community of Belgium. It is responsible for quality assurance of bachelor and master programs, as well as institutional accreditation of higher education institutions. Its decisions influence program legitimacy, funding eligibility, and recognition across the Dutch-speaking regions and the wider European higher education area.

The organization was established in 2005 through the merger of the Dutch and Flemish accreditation bodies to create a unified quality assurance system for both regions. It operates as an independent body with a board that includes representatives from the Netherlands and Flanders and a secretariat that conducts evaluations, publishes decisions, and maintains public records.

deNVAO’s processes involve institutional self-evaluation, site visits by international peer panels, and formal accreditation decisions based on published standards aligned with the European Standards and Guidelines for quality assurance in higher education. Evaluation reports and decision letters are made public, providing accountability and guidance for institutions. Accreditation decisions are typically published for a defined period and influence ongoing program quality, continuity, and international recognition.

The scope covers both research universities and universities of applied sciences in the Netherlands and Flanders, including new or significantly revised programs and some cross-border or joint-degree offerings. The agency also coordinates with other quality assurance bodies to ensure consistency with European norms and facilitates recognition of degrees across borders.

Governance is provided by a joint board with equal representation from both regions, supported by a secretariat. Funding comes from the Dutch and Flemish governments, and deNVAO emphasizes transparency through public access to decisions and evaluation materials.
