Davanzale is an architectural term referring to the horizontal surface at the bottom of a window opening. In Italian use, the word most commonly denotes the window sill, the ledge that projects from the wall beneath a window on both the interior and exterior sides.

Function and form: The exterior davanzale protects the wall from rain, helps channel water away, and provides a small surface for plants or objects in some designs. Interior davanzali finish the window opening and can serve as a shallow shelf; their slope and thickness depend on climate and structure.

Materials and construction: External sills are typically made from stone, concrete, brick, tile, metal, or weather-treated wood, and are often cast or carved to include a small outward slope. Internal sills may be plaster, wood, stone, or engineered materials and are integrated with the interior finish.
