Datajärvet, or "data lakes" in English, are centralized repositories designed to store vast amounts of raw data in its native format. Unlike traditional data warehouses that require structured data before ingestion, data lakes can accommodate structured, semi-structured, and unstructured data. This flexibility allows organizations to store all their data, regardless of its origin or format, without needing to define its purpose or structure beforehand.

The primary advantage of a data lake is its ability to hold diverse data types, including sensor data, social media feeds, log files, images, and videos, alongside more traditional structured data from operational systems. This unifies data from various sources, making it accessible for analysis, machine learning, and other advanced analytics. The schema is applied when the data is read, rather than when it is written, offering greater agility in data exploration and discovery.

Data lakes are typically built on scalable and cost-effective storage technologies, often leveraging distributed file systems like Hadoop Distributed File System (HDFS) or cloud object storage services. This architecture enables organizations to scale their data storage and processing capabilities as their data volumes grow.
