Databasystem is a software framework that provides structured storage, retrieval, and management of data. It comprises the database itself and the software layer that governs access, integrity, and performance, typically through a database management system (DBMS). A databasystem enables data modeling, constraint enforcement, query execution, and mechanisms for durability and concurrent access across users and applications.

Core components include the DBMS engine, storage subsystem, a metadata catalog, a transaction manager, a query processor, an indexing subsystem, and user interfaces or application programming interfaces. The storage subsystem handles data files and logs; the transaction manager coordinates atomicity, consistency, isolation, and durability (ACID) or, in some systems, BASE guarantees. The query processor optimizes and executes statements, often leveraging indexes and execution plans. The metadata catalog stores schema, statistics, permissions, and data lineage.

Architectures and data models: Databasystems can be centralized, client-server, distributed, or cloud-based. Data models vary from relational (tables and SQL) to document, key-value, columnar, and graph forms. NoSQL and NewSQL approaches address scalability and flexibility, sometimes combining models in a multi-model system.

Key features include data integrity constraints, transaction management, replication, backup and recovery, partitioning or sharding, security, and performance optimization. Standards such as SQL and interfaces like ODBC and JDBC support interoperability.

Use cases include transactional processing, data warehousing and analytics, content management, and Internet of Things data storage.
