Darbuotojas is a person who performs work for an employer under an employment contract and receives remuneration. The term comes from the Lithuanian word darbas, meaning work, with the suffix -tojas denoting a doer.

In a typical employment relationship, the darbuotojas supplies labor or services, and the employer organizes the work process, provides the tools or environment, and pays wages. The relationship is formalized by a darbo sutartis (employment contract) and governed by the Labour Code and related legislation.

Rights of the darbuotojas include fair remuneration, safe and healthy working conditions, rest breaks and annual leave, social security coverage, and equal treatment. Obligations include performing duties with due diligence, following lawful instructions and internal rules, protecting confidential information, and complying with safety requirements.

Types of employment include permanent contracts, fixed-term contracts, part-time contracts, and seasonal or temporary work. Employee status may include probation periods and, in some cases, remote or hybrid arrangements. Terms such as working hours, overtime, and leave are defined in law and the contract.

Termination of employment can occur by resignation, dismissal, or expiration of the term. The law sets notice periods, grounds for dismissal, and protections against unfair treatment. Disputes are resolved under Labour Code procedures, with collective agreements sometimes providing additional rights.
