DALL·E is a family of image generation models developed by OpenAI. It creates images from natural-language prompts and combines concepts in novel ways. The name blends the Pixar character WALL·E and the artist Salvador Dalí, signaling the system’s aim to generate imaginative visuals from text.

OpenAI released DALL·E in 2021 as a transformer-based model that translates text prompts into a discrete image representation using a learned vocabulary of image tokens. A second generation, DALL·E 2, launched in 2022 with diffusion-based generation, producing higher-resolution images and more realistic rendering. DALL·E 2 introduced editing capabilities, such as inpainting to fill missing areas and outpainting to extend images.

Subsequent iterations emphasized alignment with user intent and broader accessibility. DALL·E 3, released around 2023–2024, improved prompt understanding and is designed to work within ChatGPT, offering tighter integration and safety safeguards. OpenAI notes ongoing attention to content safety, copyright considerations, and mitigation of social biases in generated outputs.

Applications include concept art, design exploration, education, and media production. Outputs are subject to usage policies and licensing, and may reflect biases present in training data.
