Dali jimuisi, also known as Dali’s "Jimuisi" or Dali’s "Jimuisi" Tea Ceremony, refers to a traditional tea-drinking ritual associated with the Chinese tea master and calligrapher Dali (1322–1398), whose full name was Lu Youxiu. Though not a formalized school like the Japanese chanoyu or Chinese gongfu cha, Dali’s approach to tea was deeply rooted in Zen Buddhist philosophy and minimalist aesthetics, emphasizing simplicity, mindfulness, and the harmony between tea and nature.

Dali’s tea practice was documented in his Jimuisi (茶牢室), a small, unadorned tea room he designed in his home. The space was intentionally plain, reflecting his belief that true appreciation of tea lay in its natural essence rather than elaborate surroundings. He advocated for using simple, rustic utensils—such as clay teapots and coarse porcelain—and preferred raw, unrefined teas like wild mountain tea, which he believed preserved the tea’s authentic flavor and spiritual qualities.

His teachings emphasized the importance of preparation and presence, encouraging drinkers to savor each sip mindfully. Dali’s influence extended beyond tea, as his principles aligned with the wuxia (無邪) or "innocent and guileless" ethos of the Chan (Zen) tradition, where imperfection and spontaneity were valued over rigid convention. While his methods were not codified into a structured tradition, his ideas contributed to the broader cultural appreciation of tea as a meditative and artistic practice in Ming-dynasty China.

Today, Dali’s legacy is often cited in discussions about the philosophical dimensions of tea culture, particularly in contrast to later, more formalized tea ceremonies. His emphasis on authenticity and simplicity continues to resonate with those who seek a direct, unmediated connection to tea’s origins.
