The causes of dünndarmpseudo can be varied. It is often associated with post-operative states, particularly following abdominal surgery where the intestines can be temporarily stunned or inflamed. Electrolyte imbalances, such as low potassium or calcium levels, can also disrupt normal muscle function. Certain medications, especially those affecting the nervous system or smooth muscle, can contribute to the condition. Additionally, systemic illnesses, severe infections, or conditions affecting the nerves that control the digestive tract can lead to dünndarmpseudo.

Symptoms typically include abdominal pain, bloating, nausea, and vomiting. Patients may also experience a lack of bowel movements and the passage of gas. Diagnosis usually involves a combination of clinical examination, imaging studies like X-rays or CT scans to rule out a mechanical obstruction, and laboratory tests to check for electrolyte abnormalities.

Treatment focuses on addressing the underlying cause and supportive care. This often involves bowel rest, where the patient is not allowed to eat or drink, and nasogastric tube decompression to remove accumulated contents and relieve pressure. Intravenous fluids and electrolyte correction are crucial. Once the underlying cause is resolved and bowel function returns, oral intake can be gradually reintroduced.
