The cóndor is a large bird of prey found in the Andes Mountains of South America. There are two species, the Andean condor (Vultur gryphus) and the California condor (Gymnogyps californianus), though the latter is more commonly associated with North America due to its range. These birds are among the largest flying land birds in the world, with impressive wingspans that can exceed three meters.

Cóndores are primarily scavengers, feeding on the carcasses of dead animals. Their keen eyesight allows them to spot potential food sources from great distances. They play an important ecological role by cleaning up carrion, thus preventing the spread of disease. Their plumage is typically black, with a ruff of white feathers around the neck and sometimes white patches on the wings. Males often have a distinctive red comb on their heads.

These majestic birds have a slow reproduction rate, laying only one or two eggs at a time. They are long-lived, with individuals in captivity sometimes reaching over 70 years of age. Due to habitat loss and other threats, both species have faced population declines, and conservation efforts are in place to protect them. Their cultural significance is also notable, appearing in the mythology and symbolism of various indigenous Andean cultures.
