The term blends cytosol, the aqueous interior of the cell, with cell, highlighting that many cytosolic processes operate through rapid, biochemically coupled interactions across the whole cytosol rather than within isolated subcompartments.

Definition and scope: In standard cell biology, the fluid component inside the cell is referred to as the cytosol, which, together with organelles, forms the cytoplasm. The label cytosolcell is not widely adopted as formal terminology but is sometimes used to emphasize continuous cytosolic communication and coordination of reactions that occur in different regions of the cell. The concept can also appear in educational materials or theoretical discussions about how signaling and metabolism are organized in the cytosol, including aspects of macromolecular crowding and phase behavior.
