Cystomas are a type of benign or malignant tumor characterized by the formation of cysts. These cystic structures within the tumor can vary in size and number. The term "cystoma" itself is not a specific diagnosis but rather a descriptive term indicating the presence of cystic components within a neoplasm. Therefore, understanding the precise nature of a cystoma requires further pathological examination to determine the underlying tissue of origin and whether it is benign or malignant.

The origin of cystomas can be diverse, arising from various tissues and organs. They are most commonly found in the ovary, where they are known as ovarian cystomas. These ovarian tumors can be serous, mucinous, endometrioid, or clear cell cystomas, depending on the cell type from which they originate. Other locations where cystomas can occur include the pancreas, skin, and salivary glands.

Symptoms associated with cystomas depend heavily on their size, location, and whether they are benign or malignant. Small benign cystomas may be asymptomatic and discovered incidentally during medical imaging. Larger cystomas can cause pressure symptoms, pain, or discomfort in the affected area. Malignant cystomas, or cystocarcinomas, can exhibit more aggressive behavior, including rapid growth, invasion of surrounding tissues, and metastasis. Diagnosis typically involves imaging studies such as ultrasound, CT scans, or MRI, followed by a biopsy for definitive pathological classification. Treatment strategies vary widely, ranging from observation for small, asymptomatic benign lesions to surgical removal for larger symptomatic or malignant tumors.
