Cylindercoated is a term used in engineering and manufacturing to describe cylindrical components whose surfaces have been treated with a protective or functional coating. The term is not tied to a single standard process, but rather to the class of coatings applied to bore or outer cylindrical surfaces to meet performance goals such as wear resistance, corrosion protection, or improved lubrication and heat transfer.

Coating materials commonly used on cylinder surfaces include metallic coatings (chromium, nickel, cobalt alloys), ceramic coatings (alumina, silicon carbide, zirconia), and polymer-based or composite coatings that reduce friction or improve sealing. In engine technology, bore coatings such as nickel-silicon carbide (Nikasil) and various ceramic or polymer-ceramic composites are used to improve durability and efficiency.

Applications span internal combustion engine cylinder bores, hydraulic and pneumatic cylinder bores, turbine and pump components, and rotary or linear bearing surfaces where a cylindrical geometry is critical. Coating processes include thermal spray methods (plasma spray, high-velocity oxy-fuel), electroplating and electrochemical deposition, chemical and physical vapor deposition, and laser-assisted cladding or deposition.

Key considerations when selecting a cylinder coating include coating thickness and uniformity, adhesion to the substrate, thermal expansion compatibility, residual stresses, and cost. The coating must withstand operating temperatures, pressures, and lubrication conditions while preserving the geometry of the cylinder bore or outer surface. Quality control often involves microscopy, adhesion testing, thickness measurement, and nondestructive evaluation.
