Cykelhjul, or bicycle wheel, is the fundamental component that provides mobility, steering, and stability to a bicycle. It consists of a rim, spokes (or centric spoked versions), a hub, and a tire mounted on the rim. The rim holds the tire and is usually made from aluminium, carbon fibre, steel or composite materials, each offering different stiffness, weight and durability characteristics. The hub contains the axle and bearings that allow rotation; it may also integrate braking surfaces or drivetrain components such as a cog or freewheel. The spokes provide structural support, transmitting bearing loads from the rim to the hub, and are tensioned during wheel building to achieve true geometry.

Wheel design varies with application. Road wheels typically feature thin, lightweight rims and high spoke count for stiffness; mountain bike wheels are thicker, more robust, and may use fewer spokes or knobby rims for rugged terrain. Disc brake wheels incorporate a hub with a disc rotor attachment. Spokeless alloy or carbon rims are common in performance contexts, offering reduced weight and increased stiffness at the expense of repairability. Wheel dimensions are standardized by ISO codes (e.g., 622 × 20 mm for 700C/23 mm rims).

Manufacturing methods include hand-building, which allows fine tension adjustments and custom geometries, and mass-produced discs, where a drumlike hoop is assembled in a machine. Quality control in wheel building ensures spoke tension equalization, trueness to true, and proper rim alignment—critical factors in vibration, handling, and safety. Cykelhjul remain a central focus for bicycle performance, durability, and rider preference, with ongoing research into composite materials, spoke designs, and manufacturing techniques.
