Cutlasses are short, broad swords with a single-edged blade and a generally curved profile, designed for close-quarters combat aboard ships. They became a standard weapon for sailors in many European and American navies from the 17th through the 19th centuries and were also popular among pirates and privateers.

Typical blades measure about 28 to 32 inches in length, with an overall length around 33 to 40 inches. The blade is single-edged, often with a shallow curve and a sharpened cutting edge on the convex side; the back edge is usually dull. Point and tip are sturdy for thrusting or chopping. Hilt designs range from simple straight grips with a small guard to more elaborate knuckle-reinforced baskets in some patterns.

Cutlasses were favored for their ability to deliver powerful slashing cuts in narrow spaces on deck, and their blade could cut through rope, canvas, and light timber more readily than longer, heavier swords. They complemented other naval weapons, and patterns were produced in many countries, including Britain, Spain, and the Low Countries.

Today, cutlasses are seen mainly in historical reenactments, museums, and as collectibles, with many modern reproductions used for film and ceremonial purposes. They are often categorized as naval cutlasses or hangers.
