It refers to the process by which grasslands, pastures, or open woodland areas gradually become dominated by shrubs. This ecological shift can occur naturally or be influenced by human activities and changes in land management.

Natural factors contributing to cserjésítés include changes in climate, such as increased rainfall or altered temperature patterns, which may favor the growth of woody species over grasses. Succession, the natural process of ecological change over time, can also lead to shrubification as pioneer species give way to more competitive woody plants.

Human-induced causes are often significant. A common driver is the reduction or cessation of grazing by livestock or wild herbivores. When grazing pressure is removed, shrubs can outcompete grasses for light, water, and nutrients, leading to their proliferation.
