csekk

Csekk is the Hungarian term for a bank check, a negotiable instrument that orders a bank to pay a specified sum to a named payee or to the bearer.

In Hungary, a csekk operates as a written instruction that transfers funds from the payer’s account to the recipient when presented for payment and processed by the payer’s bank. The word is a loanword from European banking terminology, derived from the German Scheck and cognate with the English "check" and the French "chèque."

A typical csekk includes the payee’s name, the amount in numerals and in words, the issue date, and the payer’s signature; it may be crossed to restrict payment to a bank account rather than to cash, and it may bear bank stamps or endorsements. Upon payment, the bank debits the payer’s account and credits the recipient.

Today, the use of csekk has declined in many markets as electronic transfers, card payments, and online banking become standard. In Hungary, some businesses and individuals still use checks for certain transactions or legacy workflows, but most routine payments are conducted electronically.
