Csalánkiütés, also known as urticaria or hives, is a common skin reaction characterized by the sudden appearance of raised, itchy welts or bumps on the skin. These welts, often referred to as wheals, can vary in size and shape and may merge to form larger areas. The redness and swelling associated with csalánkiütés are caused by the release of histamine and other chemicals from mast cells in the skin, leading to increased blood flow and permeability of small blood vessels.

The exact cause of csalánkiütés can be diverse. Common triggers include allergic reactions to foods, medications, insect bites or stings, and contact with certain plants or chemicals. However, it can also be non-allergic in origin, such as those brought on by physical stimuli like pressure, heat, cold, or sunlight (physical urticaria). Infections, stress, and underlying medical conditions can also play a role. In some cases, the cause remains unknown, which is termed idiopathic urticaria.

The primary symptom of csalánkiütés is intense itching, which can be distressing. The welts typically appear suddenly and can last from a few minutes to several hours, often disappearing and reappearing in different locations. While acute urticaria usually resolves within six weeks, chronic urticaria persists for longer periods, often daily for more than six weeks. Diagnosis is typically made based on the characteristic appearance of the rash and a review of the individual's medical history and potential triggers. Treatment focuses on relieving symptoms, often with oral antihistamines. Avoiding known triggers is also a key component of management.
