Crossphylum refers to the concept of transferring genetic material or traits between organisms belonging to different phyla. Phyla represent one of the highest taxonomic ranks in the classification of life, grouping together animals with a fundamental body plan. Therefore, crossphylum transfer implies a significant evolutionary distance between the donor and recipient organisms.

In biological contexts, the term can be used in several ways. It might describe the transfer of genes through mechanisms like horizontal gene transfer, where genetic material is exchanged between unrelated organisms, not through direct reproduction. While horizontal gene transfer is well-documented within and between bacterial phyla, its occurrence between vastly different eukaryotic phyla is exceptionally rare and often debated.

Alternatively, "crossphylum" can refer to the study of convergent evolution, where unrelated organisms from different phyla independently evolve similar traits or adaptations due to similar environmental pressures. For instance, the development of wings in birds (phylum Chordata) and insects (phylum Arthropoda) is a classic example of convergent evolution, not a direct genetic transfer. The term is less commonly used in reference to artificial genetic engineering, as such modifications are typically within species or closely related groups, though the theoretical possibility of engineering across phyla exists.
