Crossoverdempning, often translated as crossover damping, refers to techniques used to dampen resonant or unduly energetic behavior in the crossover network of a signal path, most notably in loudspeaker systems. The crossover network, which splits an audio signal into separate frequency bands using inductors, capacitors and resistors, can exhibit resonances and peaking near the crossover frequencies. Damping aims to reduce these effects to achieve a more stable and natural frequency response.

In practice, crossoverdempning involves adding lossy elements or networks to attenuate ringing and limit Q factors in the filter stages. Common methods include placing damping resistors in series or parallel with filter components, and using Boucherot or Zobel networks (a resistor-capacitor network) across drivers to flatten impedance and suppress resonances. Additional measures may include RC snubbers, ferrite damping, or carefully chosen component tolerances to prevent excessive peaking in the crossover region. The goal is to achieve smoother transitions between frequency bands without significantly degrading overall efficiency or transient response.

The application of crossover damping is a balance between reducing unwanted resonances and maintaining desired loudness, impedance behavior, and phase alignment. Excessive damping can dull dynamics or alter the intended filter characteristics, while too little damping can leave resonances that color the sound. In active crossovers, some damping is handled by the amplifier and processing chain, but passive networks still benefit from appropriate damping strategies.
