Crankbaits are hard-bodied fishing lures designed to dive and swim with a lifelike action when retrieved. They are typically made of plastic or wood and feature a projecting plastic or metal lip that deflects water to push the lure downward. Many models include internal rattles to add vibration. Crankbaits imitate small baitfish and are used to provoke strikes from predatory species such as bass, walleye, pike, and musky.

Diving depth is controlled by the size and angle of the bill; larger or steeper bills produce deeper dives. Crankbaits are commonly categorized by diving depth: shallow-diving (roughly 3–6 ft), medium-diving (6–15 ft), and deep-diving (15 ft and deeper). Body shape influences action: round-bodied lures tend to have a wider wobble, while flatter, more angular bodies produce a tighter roll. Some models are designed to suspend or slow-sink after a retrieve.

Variants include lipless crankbaits, which have no bill and dive by winding at varying speeds to achieve different depths, offering a different action and casting distance. Crankbaits are often equipped with two or more treble hooks and may be hollow-bodied or internally weighted to help achieve the desired buoyancy. They can be used along weed edges, in open water, and around structure, depending on the target species.

Effective use involves selecting a lure with appropriate depth and color for the water conditions, and using retrieval patterns that produce action: a steady retrieve, a stop-and-go pause, or a pull-and-drop erratic cadence. Line choice (monofilament, fluorocarbon, or braided line) and rod action (moderate to fast taper) influence casting distance and lure behavior. Maintenance includes replacing damaged hooks and ensuring the lip remains intact.
