In French usage the term can refer to scholars of cosmology as a discipline and to authors who write or speculate about creation myths as well as to scientists who address cosmic origins.

Etymology and usage: The word derives from Greek kosmos meaning "world" or "order" and gignesthai meaning "to be born." The suffix -iste signals a practitioner. In contemporary writing, the English equivalent cosmogonist is uncommon in scientific contexts, where cosmologist is standard. When mythic or literary cosmogonies are the focus, cosmogonist may describe a mythographer or writer of creation narratives.
