Corregidor is an island at the entrance to Manila Bay in the Philippines, located off the southern tip of the bay and part of Cavite province. The rocky landmass is best known for its extensive coastal fortifications and its pivotal role in World War II, when American and Filipino forces defended the approaches to Manila against Japanese invasion.

Historically, Corregidor housed fortifications such as Fort Mills and various battery sites built and expanded in the early 20th century to protect Manila Bay. During World War II, it withstood a prolonged Japanese siege that culminated in the surrender of Allied forces on May 6, 1942. The island remained under Japanese control until 1945, when Allied forces retook it during the liberation of the Philippines. A major underground complex on the island, the Malinta Tunnel, served as a command center and shelter during the conflict. After the war, many structures were damaged or abandoned, but portions of the fortifications have been preserved as historical monuments.

In the present day, Corregidor is recognized as a National Historical Landmark and functions as a heritage site and tourist destination. Visitors can explore preserved fortifications, memorials, and museums, including the Pacific War Memorial and the Corregidor Island Museum. Access is primarily by ferry from Manila or nearby ports, often with guided tours arranged by government agencies and heritage organizations. The island hosts a small resident community and limited facilities to support tourism, reflecting its status as a historical site rather than a typical inhabited municipality.
