Coregistering refers to the process of aligning two or more datasets so that corresponding points or structures occupy the same coordinate positions. It is commonly used in medical imaging, remote sensing, geospatial analysis, and computer vision to combine information from different sensors, times, or modalities (for example, aligning MRI and PET scans, or multispectral satellite images).

The procedure typically involves selecting a reference image, estimating a spatial transformation that maps the moving image to the reference, and resampling the moving image using interpolation. Transformations can be rigid (translation and rotation), affine (adding scaling and shearing), or nonrigid/deformable (allowing local warping). Optimization seeks to minimize or maximize a similarity metric—such as mean squared error, normalized cross-correlation, or mutual information—using algorithms like gradient descent or global search methods.

Practical coregistration requires preprocessing (noise reduction, bias correction, intensity normalization), appropriate choice of metric for multimodal data, and attention to interpolation artifacts. Accuracy is assessed by visual inspection, landmark distances, or quantitative overlap measures. Challenges include differing image contrast, resolution mismatch, motion artifacts, and large deformations.

Software tools for coregistering include specialized packages in neuroimaging (SPM, FSL, ANTs) and remote sensing/GIS applications. Proper coregistration is critical for multimodal analysis, longitudinal studies, and any application that integrates spatially corresponding data.
