A copula is a term with two distinct meanings in different fields: linguistics and statistics. In both senses it denotes a link, but the objects linked differ: a linguistic predicate with a subject, and a probabilistic dependence structure for random variables.

In linguistics, a copula is the word or particle that links a subject with a predicate, most commonly the verb to be in many languages. It encodes predication and can carry tense, aspect, or mood. In English, this appears as forms of be, as in "The sky is blue." In other languages the copula may be required for grammatical sentences or may be omitted in the present tense, a phenomenon known as a zero copula. Copulas connect noun phrases, adjectives, or other predicates to the subject and can interact with other grammatical elements.

In probability theory, a copula is a function that joins univariate marginal distribution functions to form a multivariate distribution. If Fi is the distribution function of the ith variable and F(x1,...,xd) is the joint distribution, then F(x1,...,xd) = C(F1(x1),...,Fd(xd)) for an appropriate copula C. Sklar’s theorem states that such a copula exists for any multivariate distribution with given margins, and that it is essentially unique if the marginals are continuous. Common families of copulas include Gaussian, t, Clayton, Gumbel, and Frank, each capturing different patterns of dependence and tail behavior.

Copula theory is applied in finance, insurance, hydrology, and risk management to model dependencies separately from the behavior of individual variables. Limitations include sensitivity to tail dependence, estimation challenges in high dimensions, and the need for careful selection of the copula to reflect real-world dependence structures.
