Conséquentialistes are a group of philosophers who believe that the morality of an action is determined by its outcomes or consequences. This ethical framework, known as consequentialism, stands in contrast to deontological ethics, which focuses on duties and rules, and virtue ethics, which emphasizes character traits.

The core idea of consequentialism is that the rightness or wrongness of an act depends solely on the goodness or badness of the results it produces. If an action leads to a better overall state of affairs than any other available action, then it is considered morally right. Conversely, an action that produces worse consequences is considered morally wrong.

There are various forms of consequentialism, with the most prominent being utilitarianism. Utilitarianism, famously associated with philosophers like Jeremy Bentham and John Stuart Mill, suggests that the morally right action is the one that maximizes overall happiness or pleasure and minimizes suffering or pain. Other forms of consequentialism might focus on maximizing welfare, well-being, or the satisfaction of preferences, rather than just happiness.

A key challenge for consequentialist theories is accurately predicting and evaluating all potential consequences of an action, which can be complex and far-reaching. Additionally, consequentialism can sometimes lead to conclusions that seem counterintuitive, such as justifying actions that appear inherently wrong if they lead to a sufficiently good outcome. Despite these challenges, consequentialism remains a significant and influential approach in ethical philosophy.
