Compstbakken, or the compost bin, refers to a structure or designated area used for composting organic waste such as fruit and vegetable scraps, coffee grounds, leaves, and grass clippings. Through microbial activity and, in some designs, passive heat, these materials break down into dark, crumbly compost that can be returned to soil as a nutrient source.

Forms and construction vary. Common types include open heaps, wooden or plastic bins, and rotating drums. Sizes range from small household units to larger municipal or community installations. A good compostbakken is located on level ground, with enough space for turning and access for frequent maintenance, and it should be placed away from living areas if odors are a concern.

Process and maintenance are guided by balance and accessibility. A healthy mix typically uses greens (nitrogen-rich) and browns (carbon-rich) to achieve a rough carbon-to-nitrogen ratio around 25–30:1. Materials should be shredded or chopped when possible. Maintain moisture like a wrung-out sponge and aerate by turning or using a design that promotes airflow. Avoid adding meat, dairy, fats, diseased plants, or invasive weeds. Odors usually indicate anaerobic conditions or over-watering, which can be remedied by turning and adjusting moisture.

Finished compost is dark, crumbly, and earthy-smelling. It can be used to improve soil structure, fertility, and moisture retention, or as mulch around plants. Regularly turning and monitoring moisture helps maintain steady decomposition.
