Communautaire is a French adjective that denotes a relation to a community or to communal life. It derives from the noun communauté (community) and from Latin communis meaning shared or common. In everyday language, it can describe issues, organizations, or activities that concern a community, such as local affairs, cultural groups, or social projects.

In legal and political discourse, the term often has a more formal scope. Droit communautaire refers to the body of law applicable within a Community or Union framework, historically the European Economic Community and its successor, the European Union. The expression ordre communautaire is used to describe the legal order created by community or supranational law. Beyond Europe, communautaire can describe community-based initiatives or governance models, where decisions are taken at the level of a community rather than by broad central authorities.

Common usages include phrases such as politique communautaire, dimension communautaire, or sécurité communautaire, which indicate policies or programs aimed at communities or community life rather than at individuals alone. In Canadian French and Quebec French, the term is frequent in administrative language to distinguish community authorities or services (services communautaires, affaires communautaires) from provincial or federal structures.

The term is generally neutral, but it can acquire a charged nuance in political debates where “the community” is invoked in discussions about multiculturalism, minority rights, or the balance between local and national interests. As such, it functions across sociological, legal, and administrative contexts to denote anything pertaining to the life, rights, or governance of communities.
