Colpos is a term that refers to the colposcope, a medical instrument used during a colposcopy examination. A colposcope is a specialized microscope with a light source that allows a healthcare provider to examine the cervix, vagina, and vulva with magnification. This examination is typically performed to investigate abnormal results from a Pap smear or HPV test, or to evaluate the cause of unusual vaginal bleeding.

During a colposcopy, the colposcope is positioned outside the body, and the provider looks through the eyepiece to view the tissues. The colposcope itself does not touch the patient. In addition to magnification, the colposcope provides illumination, which helps to visualize the surface of the cervix and other examined areas. Solutions, such as acetic acid, are often applied to the tissues to highlight any abnormal areas, which may appear as white patches under the magnified view. Biopsies can be taken if necessary, guided by the magnified view provided by the colposcope. The term "colpos" itself is not a medical condition but rather a direct reference to the equipment used in the procedure.
