colorUV

colorUV is a term used in imaging and color science to describe a framework for encoding information that extends beyond the visible spectrum to include ultraviolet data. It is not a single standardized system; rather, it denotes several experimental approaches that pair traditional color channels with ultraviolet measurements, enabling analysis of spectral content that lies outside ordinary color vision.

In typical colorUV representations, data may be stored as a multi-channel image, such as RGB with an accompanying UV channel (RGBU or RGBUV). Ultraviolet data is captured with sensors sensitive to UV wavelengths and registered with the visible channels. Because UV light is not visible to the human eye, direct display is not possible; visualization often relies on mapped representations or derived color appearance models, while the UV channel primarily serves quantitative analysis.

Calibration and spectral sensitivity are central to colorUV systems. Different implementations may use different UV bands (near-UV, far-UV) and various normalization or weighting schemes. Converting colorUV data to standard color spaces typically involves spectral response functions and colorimetric calculations, with the UV component interpreted through analysis rather than direct display.

Applications of colorUV concepts appear in material science, art conservation, forensic analysis, and biology. The additional UV channel can reveal pigment fluorescence, coatings, or material properties invisible to visible-light cameras, supporting research, documentation, and quality control.

Limitations include sensor cost and calibration complexity, data volume, and a lack of universal standards. As an area of ongoing study, colorUV is mainly used in experimental workflows and specialized imaging applications, rather than as a general-purpose color encoding for consumer devices.
