A collaboratory, short for collaborative laboratory, is a space—physical or virtual—that enables researchers from multiple institutions to work together on scientific problems. Collaboratories emphasize distributed teams, shared data and instrumentation, and coordinated experimentation across geographic or organizational boundaries.

The concept arose in the late 1990s within the broader movement toward cyberinfrastructure and e-science, which sought to dissolve practical barriers to collaboration. The term "collaboratory" was popularized to describe environments that integrate communication, data management, computational resources, and experimental workflows to support collaborative research.

Core components typically include tools for real-time communication (video conferencing, chat), asynchronous collaboration (document sharing, version control), shared data repositories with metadata and access controls, workflow management to coordinate analyses, and connections to computing resources such as clusters or cloud services.
