Coconspirators are individuals who participate in a conspiracy, a plan by two or more people to commit wrongdoing. The term highlights shared intent and coordinated action among members of a group aiming to achieve a criminal or illicit objective. In legal contexts, coconspirators are often treated as co-defendants in conspiracy charges and may face liability for crimes committed by others within the scope of the conspiracy.

Legal framework varies by jurisdiction but commonly requires three elements: an agreement between at least two people to commit a crime, intent to achieve that objective, and sometimes an overt act in furtherance of the plan. Once a conspiracy is formed, members can be held liable not only for their own acts but also for offenses committed by other conspirators if those acts were in furtherance of the agreed-upon objective and reasonably foreseeable.

Roles within a conspiracy can differ. Planners design the scheme, funders provide resources, recruiters enlist participants, and executors carry out or facilitate the criminal acts. A coconspirator does not need to be the primary actor in the crime; participating in the overall plan can be enough for liability.

Distinguishing coconspirators from accomplices: an accomplice typically assists in the execution of a crime, whereas a coconspirator is a participant in the underlying agreement itself. Some legal systems require an overt act by at least one conspirator to sustain charges; others treat mere agreement as sufficient.

Beyond criminal law, the term coconspirators can be used informally to describe individuals who collude or work together in illicit schemes in business or politics, though the precise legal implications depend on jurisdiction and context.
