Coatproteiineiden, often translated as coat proteins, are essential components involved in vesicular transport within cells. These proteins assemble on the surface of budding vesicles, helping to shape the vesicle membrane and recruit specific cargo molecules. This process is crucial for the efficient and regulated movement of materials between different cellular compartments, such as the endoplasmic reticulum, Golgi apparatus, and plasma membrane.

There are several major types of coat proteins, each associated with distinct transport pathways. Clathrin is perhaps the most well-known, forming a lattice-like structure that facilitates the formation of vesicles involved in endocytosis and transport from the Golgi to lysosomes. COPI and COPII coats are also critical. COPI coats are involved in retrograde transport within the Golgi and from the Golgi back to the endoplasmic reticulum, while COPII coats mediate anterograde transport from the endoplasmic reticulum to the Golgi.

The assembly and disassembly of these protein coats are tightly regulated by other cellular factors, including small GTPases like ARF and Sar1, which act as molecular switches. These GTPases signal when and where coat proteins should assemble and subsequently dissociate once the vesicle has budded off from the donor membrane. Without functional coat proteins, cellular trafficking would be disorganized, leading to impaired cellular function and potentially disease.
