Coastalmeadow is a plant community found in coastal landscapes where maritime influences create unique soil and moisture conditions. These meadows occupy low-lying areas behind dunes or along marsh margins and are characterized by herbaceous vegetation dominated by grasses and forbs capable of tolerating salt spray, wind exposure, and periodic flooding.

Ecology and composition: The species assemblage varies by region but commonly includes salt-tolerant grasses such as Spartina spp. in more saline zones and various tussock grasses in less saline zones, with numerous forbs providing nectar and habitat for insects and birds. Soils are typically sandy or peaty, with moderate to high salinity and fluctuating moisture regimes. The vegetation forms a dense sward that reduces erosion and supports invertebrate life and migratory birds.

Disturbance and dynamics: Coastalmeadow is dynamic; it can transition to salt marshes or dune systems depending on hydrology, sedimentation, and vegetation succession. Human activities such as coastal development, dredging, and altered hydrology can disrupt natural processes.

Conservation and management: Restoration involves reestablishing hydrological conditions, controlling invasive species, and, where appropriate, mowing or grazing to mimic historical disturbance and maintain species diversity. Protected areas and restoration projects aim to preserve biodiversity, habitat for shorebirds, pollinators, and other wildlife, and to enhance coastal resilience to erosion and sea-level rise.
