Coalbearing is an adjective used in geology and mining to describe rocks, formations, or regions that contain coal or coal seams. In sedimentary sequences, coal-bearing units are typically coal seams interlayered with other lithologies such as sandstone, siltstone or shale, reflecting deposition in environments where peat accumulated and was later transformed into coal.

Coal formation occurs from land plant material deposited in ancient wetlands, subjected to burial and heat over geological time to yield coal of various ranks, from lignite to anthracite. In coal-bearing formations, the coal seams vary in thickness and are separated by non-coal beds. The term emphasizes the presence of coal as a significant component of the unit, rather than a pure coal bed alone.

Geographically, coal-bearing sequences are common in many coal-producing regions, notably in the Carboniferous and Permian successions. In the United Kingdom they are described as the Coal Measures; in North America as coal-bearing strata within Pennsylvanian and other periods. Each region has characteristic seam patterns and associated rocks that guide exploration and mining.
