Higher clock speeds typically translate to improved performance in tasks that are dependent on the processor's execution rate. However, there are limitations to increasing clock speed. Power consumption increases exponentially with clock frequency, leading to heat generation and degradation of the processor's lifespan. Furthermore, the efficiency of increasing clock speed diminishes as the clock rate approaches the optimal frequency of the underlying technology.

The practice of increasing clock speed with each successive processor generation is sometimes referred to as the "clock speed chase." As manufacturing processes advance, the ability to pack more transistors onto a single processor core increases, allowing for higher clock rates. However, there is a point of diminishing returns, where increased power consumption outweighs the benefits of a higher clock speed.

Clock speed can also be comparative, with manufacturers citing clock rates as a benchmark for their processor's performance. However, other factors, such as the number of cores, instructions per clock (IPC), and threads, can significantly influence overall performance. Therefore, relying solely on clock speed as a metric may not accurately reflect a processor's capabilities. The complexity of comparing processors often incorporates multiple factors, rendering simple clock speed comparisons insufficient.
