A clearomizer consists of a tank body (glass or plastic), a wicking system that draws liquid to the coil, a heating coil, a mouthpiece, and a top or bottom cap that seals the device. The coil heats the liquid in the wick, producing vapor when the device is activated. Liquid moves to the coil by capillary action, and the transparent tank allows monitoring of when a refill is needed.

There are two common coil configurations: top-coil and bottom-coil. Top-coil models place the coil above the wick, which can simplify refilling but may be more prone to flooding if overfilled; bottom-coil designs place the coil at the bottom and typically provide steadier wicking. Clearomizers use replaceable coil heads rather than built-in coils, making maintenance more economical.

Filling methods vary: top-fill, bottom-fill, or side-fill designs. Users should avoid overfilling, ensure proper venting, and prime new coils to prevent dry hits.

Advantages include larger liquid capacity, ease of refilling, and visibility of e-liquid. Disadvantages include potential leaks if mishandled or overfilled, and coil wear requiring periodic replacement.
